Laws of Motion and Progress
Isaac Newton taught three laws of physical motion. We find it a useful to think about these
laws as an analogy for "personal motion" or progress.

First Law of Motion
An object at rest tends to stay at rest and an object in motion tends to stay in motion with
the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.
Without a "force" in our lives, we tend to keep doing the same things and getting the same
results - we tend to stay at rest or in motion with the same speed and direction. Newton
defined this as Inertia. In personal progress we call it things like "habit" or "rut"
Newton defined "contact" and "at-a-distance" forces. We all have "contact" forces that most
of us don't really know how to harness and apply: Our mind, our emotions and work, our
Heart, Head, and Hands. Your coach can help you learn to focus and apply those forces.
But more importantly, a coach is an "at-a-distance" force. Someone that is always there to
provide focus, ideas, encouragement, accountability. A coach can help you see the forest
when you are deep in the trees.

Second Law of Motion
The acceleration of an object as produced by a net force is directly proportional to the magnitude of the net force, in the
same direction as the net force, and inversely proportional to the mass of the object.
Acceleration and direction. That's what coaching is. Helping you change faster and in the right direction. Given a good
map, we all can climb the mountain on our own...eventually, but we all get discouraged or distracted and go in different
directions. A coach accelerates change because he helps you stay on the path to your Integrity Peak.
In personal progress, the deepness of our habits is equivalent to mass in this analogy. The longer we've had our habits,
the more mass, and the more force will be required to move the object - to "unlearn" the old habit and learn a new one.
Third Law of Motion
For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
Because of the force of gravity, climbing uphill is much more difficult than walking on the flat or down hill. The equal and
opposite reaction to personal progress is every bit as real as physical gravity. Progress is hard! Expect it to be from the
beginning. Your coach understands this and will be there to help you overcome the opposition and keep climbing.
